Slim Thug has released a new album, ‘Thug Life,’ but don’t be fooled into thinking that this is a remake of the 2Pac project of the same name.
While the production on tracks like ‘No Lie’ bring elements of vintage West Coast production (pitch-bends, etc), this is a strongly Southern affair.
The Houston rapper calls on names including Scarface, Z-Ro, Yung Al, and the late Le$ Mug for the 10-track, 31-minute collection. Bringing some strong samples, Slim Thug holds it down on tracks like ‘THUG LIFE (Life is Crazy):’
Far from just bragging on his street credentials, Slim Thug shows maturity on ‘Make It Right,’ while addressing the Coronavirus and other political issues in the lyric video for ‘This World:’
Of course, you may have heard that Slim Thug tested positive for COVID-19 and went into isolation, just before this album dropped.
Slim Thug channels Coolio’s classic ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ for ‘Paradise’ (except with much more autotune!), while Scarface helps make ‘Both Eyes Open’ one of the standouts in this collection:
‘VET’ cuts through the chatter as Slim Thug stamps his authority on the game before calling out back-stabbers in ‘Standing Alone.’ ‘Won’t Be Long (Apart)’ brings more vintage West Coast touches through the production before the album closes with the blues-laden, ‘My Shoes.’
Straight-talk, not all of the tracks hit with the same power, but there are some fine moments here to dig out – get well soon Slim Thug!
