South Bronx’s Fred The Godson has been busy lately, with the release of his third project since last November.
Following hot on the heels of ‘God Level’ and ‘Training Day,’ the Godson is back with the 21-minute, 9-track, ‘Payback.’
Keeping the guest count light, Fred handles most of the tracks by himself, with 38 Spesh and Klass Murda being the only names to share the booth.
The short ‘Intro’ gives Fred space to deliver a few street-ready bars before a skit leads into the first single, the Raekwon-inspired, ‘Rae:’
(Veterans will notice that the beat nods to AZ’s classic, ‘Mo Money, Mo Murda, Mo Homicide’)
The short but strong ‘Bodies’ brings some lyrical gunplay over a piano-blessed beat, before Fred spits more fire on the sparse, ‘Steve Sax’ and the stripped-back, ‘Let It Ring.’
‘Sweet Nothings’ comes in with a laid-back swagger courtesy of the production from Tricky Trippz as Klass Murda offsets Fred’s flow to good effect:
Uncompromising to the end, Fred delivers more sidewalk-savvy wordplay on the title track before the collection closes with ‘It’s All Basic,’ which delivers with some neck-snapping snares:
More gritty, East Coast flavor from Fred The Godson – here’s hoping he’s preparing a longer official album soon too…
