Veteran rapper, Cormega has held it down for decades without ever quite reaching the heights achieved by some of his peers in the New York rap scene. Having been shouted out on Nas’ ‘One Love’ while serving a bid, Cormega has gone on to release a series of strong albums as well as making some strong guest appearances (including recently on Conway The Machine and Alchemist’s ‘LULU’ project).
Stepping out once more, the Brooklyn-born MC has delivered this 7-track release with Havoc and Sheek Louch being the only guest MCs.
Side-stepping trap trends and autotuned production, Cormega brings a vintage hip-hop feel that relies on his socially-aware rhymes, such as with ‘On Everything (I Try):’
And the uplifting, ‘Live Your Best Life’ (ft Havoc):
Going heavy with the piano lines, Mega’s rhymes are delivered over an emotive, stripped-back backdrop that focuses your attention on the wordplay. Adding extra tints, like the brass in ‘Genuine Article’ and the sweeping soul of ‘Empty Promises,’ Cormega seems intent on delivering street lessons on this swift selection.
Closing out with ‘City of God’ ft Sheek Louch and ‘Fast Livin’ this release feels a bit like a snack – decent enough but may leave you wanting something more substantial…
